For the last several months, the Lagunitas School District has been trying to recruit a school bus driver to replace the driver who retired last June. Our efforts have included substantial advertising as well as local and regional person-to-person recruiting.
Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any qualified applicants. Due to the stringent licensing requirements for school bus drivers and a shortage of drivers across the state, it appears unlikely that we will be able to hire a driver before the start of school.
Moreover, our school bus was recently inspected and was determined to be useable but in need of substantial maintenance… or preferably replacement. The bus is over 20 years old and is not as cost effective to operate as modern buses are.
In addition, the Board of Trustees is very likely to be considering further budget reductions this fall in order to ensure the district’s financial well being in the near future. At such a time, a substantial investment in school bus services (that may prove unaffordable in the near future) would not be prudent.
While we are not giving up in our efforts to find a driver, families should assume that the school will not provide bus service for an indefinite period of time.
We encourage families to consider bike and walk to school options as well as carpooling. The district will make its best effort to support alternative transportation efforts and to provide information so that families can make the best possible choices.
I apologize for what I know will be a substantial inconvenience for many of our families and encourage you to reach out to others in your neighborhood and share transportation resources to the extent that you can.
If you have any questions about this matter, please contact me directly at the school district office (415) 488-4118 or e-mail email@example.com.
